In the face of a devastating war, Arjuna turns to his charioteer Krishna for guidance on the battlefield. Through their conversation, Krishna imparts wisdom to Arjuna, including the path to devotion and the doctrine of selfless action. The Bhagavad Gita upholds the essence and philosophical tradition of the Upanishads but also integrates dualism and theism, providing a comprehensive spiritual perspective.

Over centuries, numerous commentaries have been written on the Bhagavad Gita with diverse viewpoints. Adi Sankara's eighth-century CE commentary is one notable example. The setting of this sacred text in a battlefield is often seen as an allegory for the ethical and moral struggles encountered in human life.

The Bhagavad Gita's call for selfless action has inspired many leaders of the Indian independence movement, including Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi, who regarded it as his "spiritual dictionary."
